  1. EU Lawmakers Reach Deal on Artificial Intelligence Act -The European Union's lawmakers have agreed on the Artificial Intelligence Act, which sets rules for the ethical and safe use of AI in the EU. The Act will require companies to ensure their AI systems do not discriminate against people and to have a human in charge of the decision-making process. It also prohibits the use of certain types of AI, such as those that manipulate human behavior, and requires companies to be transparent about their use of AI. The Act still needs to be approved by the EU Parliament and individual EU member states.

  2. AI Takes Center Stage in Earnings Season - CEOs of Big Tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta, emphasized their investment and efforts in AI during their Q1 earnings calls. They mentioned AI multiple times and discussed how it's being integrated into their business segments. All three companies have powerful AI divisions and have been working in the space for years. However, the recent excitement generated by OpenAI and ChatGPT has forced them to put AI front and center in their investor statements.

  3. AI's Role in US Elections: A New Frontier - The Republican National Committee released a video generated using AI images warning of dystopia if Joe Biden is reelected. Experts warn that the increased availability and precision of AI in political campaigns will create widespread confusion among voters. AI could supercharge pre-existing campaign practices, leading to rapid response ads and claims, minute by minute. There are virtually no checks on the use of AI technology in campaigns, prompting concern from experts about a Wild West moment where it's difficult for voters to distinguish real from fake, leading to the risk of confusion and bad decisions.

  4. Edward Snowden Urges Ethical AI Training - Edward Snowden, the former NSA whistleblower, spoke at Consensus 2023 and expressed his hopes that AI could benefit humanity if researchers train it to be better than humans. Snowden argued that current AI training methods, which involve feeding AI large amounts of online content, including social media comments, limit the technology's potential. He also criticized emerging AI models for becoming less open and called for open AI models to remain open to prevent bad actors from co-opting AI technologies. Snowden warned that sophisticated AI models could fuel big tech and government-driven initiatives to encroach upon users' privacy.
